Frequently asked questions.
-
Depending on your age, the assessment process can involve a different number of appointments. For those under 18, the full assessment process typically takes 6 appointments, although this can vary. For those aged 18 or older the process may involve fewer appointments, typically 2.
-
Appointments can take place in person or over Zoom as a video call. We find that most people are happy to conduct the majority of the assessment over Zoom and come to an in-person appointment towards the end of the process. For those under 18 at least one of the appointments would need to be in person. We currently have offices in London, Birmingham and Dublin.

Each of our clinicians is regulated through their professional registration body (i.e. HCPC and/or UKCP).
The service has clarified with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that the holistic psycho-social service we provide, which includes gender, mental health and neurodevelopmental assessment and support, does not fall under their remit and as such is not eligible for CQC registration. If in the future we do provide services which will require CQC registration then we will seek registration.
Our sister service, the Gender Plus Hormone Clinic, is registered with the CQC.
-
Our current fee structure for appointments is below:
Specialist Gender Assessment appointments £325/€395 per 1 hour appointment.
Non assessment psychological support appointments are £175/€215 per 50 minute appointment.
Family therapy appointments are £200 per 75 minute appointment.
Surgery referral appointments are £325 per 1 hour appointment.
Autism assessment appointments are £650 per appointment (3 appointments lasting 60 - 90 minutes each). It is £1950 for the whole process and report.
-
The decision to increase our fees was made after careful consideration, and in the context of an increase in our running costs over the past year, which have been necessary to ensure we can continue to offer a high quality service in line with stringent NHS protocols. This approach resulted in our recent “Outstanding” rating with the CQC, which helps to increase the numbers of GPs willing to enter into a shared care agreement with the Gender Plus Hormone Clinic, something which ultimately brings costs down for our service users. We are committed to continuing to enhance our services in order to secure the continuity of care to our patients, this is more important than ever as we see trans healthcare subject to ever greater restrictions.
-
In Ireland income tax relief, typically 20% of the cost of appointments is available see www.revenue.ie/en/personal-tax-credits-reliefs-and-exemptions/health-and-age/health-expenses/index.aspx.
In the UK, although rare, we have had some people successfully apply for an Individual Funding Request through their local CCG/ICS.
Additionally we are recognised by different insurance providers both in Ireland and the UK. The amount covered will depend on the individual plan. If you have private healthcare insurance first check with the company and then contact us with your authorisation number to arrange a first appointment by emailing info@genderplus.com.
-
The increase comes into effect on April 1st, 2025.
-
Appointments booked and paid for before April 1st will be charged at the current rate, even if the appointment doesn’t take place until May or June. Any appointments booked and paid after April 1st will be charged at the new rate.
-
We don’t offer contracts but if patients book in advance via our website they can do so at the current rate prior to April 1st.
-
Plans for a subsidised pathway fund are underway and we will be announcing details in the coming weeks. The fund will be distributed to patients that are in financial hardship, offering them access to our services at a reduced rate.
-
We are happy to consider a transfer from other providers.
Please visit this page for further information on transferring from another provider.
-
The price increase will ensure we can continue to expand our team in order to offer access to the very best UK-based clinicians via both virtual and in-person meetings as well as increasing the locations of our clinics, which we are now operating across four different cities. We will also be looking to take an active role in research to help counter misinformation in the field of transgender healthcare which continues to impede access to essential services.

Gender assessment length varies depending on the age and circumstances of the client. For those under 18, the assessment process is typically 6 sessions over 6 months to explore the young person's holistic development across from birth to present day, considering such things as family life, friendships, school life, mental health, general health, significant life events, as well as sexuality and gender development. If indicated time is also given to considering gender related medical interventions. For those aged 18 or older the process may involved fewer appointments, typically 2.
Psychological support sessions are driven by the goals of the young person and family, or adult if over 18 years old. These may include exploring and making sense of their relationship to their social world or peer group while considering factors such as sexuality, gender, or other areas of difference. It may also include developing strategies and interventions to manage anxiety or distress related to these areas. These sessions tend to take place on a more frequent basis such as weekly or fortnightly.Psychological support sessions are different from assessment sessions in that they only cover the time spent meeting with the clinician. If any liaison work or report writing is needed in addition to the psychological support meetings they will be charged at the same rate. Assessment sessions on the other hand have the cost of liaison and report writing incorporated into the fee.

While access to transgender healthcare is subject to extensive waiting times on the NHS, there are now a range of independent providers on the market, giving the community essential choice when seeking private care. The majority of providers operating in this space offer a subscription-based model, with additional charges for services such as therapy sessions. While prices vary, they are all within a similar ball-park. The price increase puts Gender Plus at the more premium end of the market and this is reflected in the service it provides, from the UK-based expertise which is on offer, to the additional security of being the only independent provider supporting individuals from the age of 16, to have been rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This regulation increases the likelihood of GPs agreeing to shared care.
-
While we don’t currently offer payment plans, we can space out appointments to allow patients more time to raise the necessary funds.
-
We certainly don’t intend to. We carefully consider any price increase in the context of the current market and the high quality services on offer.
-
For the first session with young people under 18, it would be helpful for at least one parent or guardian to attend. The first appointment is a space for you both to ask any questions you have about the assessment process, and to start to build an understanding of a person’s gender identity development.
-

It is in the best interest of a patient’s long-term care to have a supportive GP, and one who is comfortable working on a shared-care basis. If this is not an option, patients are encouraged to find a new GP. Please note that GPHC can arrange private prescriptions and private blood tests, however, the cost of these must be covered by the patient.
